Best Zero Alcohol Beers in Australia (My Honest Take After Trying a Heap)
If you’re thinking about cutting back on drinking…
you’ve probably gone down the zero beer path.
And if you’ve tried a few…
you’ll know pretty quickly — they’re not all the same.
Some are actually good.
Some are average.
And some… I wouldn’t go near again.
So instead of guessing your way through it,
here’s my take on the ones I’ve tried.
This is just my personal preference — but it’ll give you a head start.
Why I Started Looking at Zero Beers
For me, it wasn’t about quitting completely.
It was more about:
- Feeling better
- Training better
- Not waking up feeling cooked
And still being able to:
Sit down and have a drink, watch the footy, go out with mates
That part matters more than people think.
The Real Challenge: Breaking the Habit
This is the bit no one really talks about.
It’s not just about the alcohol…
it’s the habit around it.
The triggers are everywhere:
- Thursday night footy
- Sunday afternoons
- Heading to the pub with mates
You’re used to having something in your hand.
So if you don’t have a plan… you fall straight back into it.
You Need a Plan (This Makes the Difference)
One thing I realised pretty quickly:
If you don’t like the zero beer you’re drinking…
you’ll go straight back to the real thing.
I’ve done it.
Drinking the crappy ones just to scratch the itch —
and it doesn’t work.
That’s why finding ones you actually enjoy matters.
My Ranking of Zero Beers (Australia)
The Good (Would Definitely Drink Again)
- Guinness 0.0
- Asahi Zero
- Heaps Normal
These are the standouts for me.
They actually taste like proper beer, easy to drink and don't feel like you are missing out.
I was pumped when I found the Guinness.
I’ve always been into stouts and red wine, especially in winter —
so having something that actually hits close to that is a game changer.
The Middle (Drinkable, But Nothing Special)
- Heineken 0.0
- Peroni 0.0
These are fine.
You’d drink them if they’re there…
but you’re not going out of your way to get them.
The Horrible (Wouldn’t Bother Again)
- XXXX Zero
- Great Northern Zero
These just didn’t do it for me.
Taste was off, no real body and not something i'd grab again.
The Honest Reality
None of these are exactly the same as a full-strength beer.
But that’s not really the point.
The point is:
- You can still have a drink
- Still be part of it
- Still enjoy the moment
Without it impacting your sleep, training, or next day
What I’ve Noticed Cutting Back
Even just reducing alcohol a bit:
- You feel better in the mornings
- Training improves
- You’re more consistent
And that adds up fast.
You Don’t Have to Quit Completely
This isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about:
Making better choices more often
If you’ve got options you actually enjoy…
it becomes a lot easier.
My Personal Picks (Quick Summary)
If I’m choosing:
Guinness 0.0 – easily my go-to
Asahi Zero
Heaps Normal
Everything else depends what’s available…
but I’m sticking with those if I’ve got the choice.
If you’re still training and trying to feel better…
you already get it.
This is a brand for guys who haven’t stopped.
Stay Strong
